Learning objectives
Introducing students to the minerals and rocks that make up the Earth's crust and their determination on the basis of physical-mechanical properties, as well as understanding their economic importance, environment of creation and distribution. Macroscopic recognition of minerals (especially ore minerals) and the most widespread types of rocks, especially on the territory of our country.
Learning outcomes
The student is qualified for practical work in the field (geological mapping and research of mineral raw materials) as well as work in laboratories where it is necessary to carry out macroscopic determination of the most common ore minerals from the non-silicate group, petrogenic minerals from the silicate group, as well as for determining the genetic type and type of rock. The acquired knowledge is also applicable in various branches of industry, construction, chemical industry, etc. Students develop the ability to further upgrade their knowledge as well as the ability to receive and analyze information.
Content
Definition of terms: mineral and rock. Occurrence and genesis of minerals. Physical, mechanical and physiological properties. Classification of minerals: native elements, sulfides, oxides, hydroxides, carbonates, sulfates, haloides, phosphates and borates. Petrogenic minerals. Structural groups of silicate minerals: tectosilicates, inosilicates, phyllosilicates, cyclosilicates, sorosilicates and nesosilicates. Types of rocks according to the way they were formed. Natural processes of rock decomposition. Types of igneous rocks according to chemical composition, place of consolidation and color index. Way of appearance, structure and texture of rocks. Classification of igneous rocks according to SiO2 content. Acidic, intermediary, basic and ultrabasic rocks - nomenclature, mineral composition, distribution and application in construction and industry. Formation and classification of sedimentary rocks according to genesis. Mineral composition of sedimentary rocks, texture and structure. Clastic sedimentary rocks. Chemical and organic sedimentary rocks. Carbonate rocks. Evaporates. Silicic sedimentary rocks. Residual sediments. Formation of metamorphic rocks, metamorphogenic minerals, structure and texture of rocks, clasification of the most important metamorphic rocks. Crystalline metamorphic rocks of higher and lower crystallinity, massive metamorphic rocks, chemical composition and identification of rocks.
Teaching Methods
Theoretical teaching: lectures with Power Point presentations of each teaching unit. Practical teaching: interactive with immediate practice with minerals and rcks from the existing systematized faculty collection. If possible, a visit to a field with an open geological profile (an active quarry is also an option).

Evaluation and grading
Two colloquiums and an oral exam.
Specific remarks
Students are required to attend classes and take two knowledge tests during the semester. Tests can be repeated once, in extracurricular time. A student who misses more than 20% of classes without a valid reason must repeat the course in order to gain the right to take the exam.
