    Learning objectives
    The basic objective of the course is to acquaint the geology students with the basics of the mining profession and science.
    Learning outcomes
    By completing of the course the student acquires the following competencies: 1. knowledge of the engineering sciences for understanding the environment of the Earth, identifying and confronting with the environmental hazards in the exploitation of natural resources while conserving the environment, and exploring the Earth, 2. global, environmental, social and legal issues and will be able to communicate effectively on those concepts with a demonstration of knowledge in visualizing and spotting problems, 3. work independently or in a team composed of experts of different profiles.
    Content
    Introduction. Definition, task, methods and location of mining in general. Affiliation with other disciplines and scientific fields. Historical development of Mining. Basic stages in mine development. Ecology and Mining. Basic characteristics of mineral deposits. Methods and procedures of exploration of mineral deposits. Deposit classification and calculation of mineral ore reserves. Surface exploitation of mineral resources reservoirs: basic elements of surface mine, types of the surface mines, the opening of surface mine. Technology of Surface exploitation with cyclic and continuous operation. Technological processes in surface exploitation (drilling, blasting, loading and transport). Overburden dumping. Mechanization in surface exploitation. Opening, preparation and development of the deposits for underground exploitation. Basic characteristics of excavation methods for bedded and ore deposits. Construction of the Underground Roadways. Technological processes in the underground exploitation (drilling, blasting, loading and transport.) Transport and haulage in the underground mines. Drainage and ventilation of mines. Mineral processing, crushing and concentration. Mechanization in the raw mineral processing.
