Learning objectives
The goals of this course are the acquisition of knowledge about the basic instrumental methods that can be used for qualitative and quantitative determination of minerals or rocks that make up mineral raw materials (ore), mastering the basic operating principles of the devices used for such tests, as well as the correct interpretation and presentation of the obtained data.
Learning outcomes
Acquiring knowledge necessary for quality collection of different types of samples in the field, safe transport to the laboratory, preparation of representative samples, quick examination with binoculars and preparation of material for further examination; Students acquire the necessary knowledge for sequence planning and the application of appropriate instrumental methods for qualitative and quantitative characterization, according to the type of sample and the set goal of testing mineral raw materials; The ability of students to analyze the obtained data as well as the interpretation of the results of the conducted research.
Content
Definition of the term - mineral raw material. The importance of field work. Types of samples and sampling models. Basics of laboratory work: preparation, classification and storage of samples. Mineral separation methods, data processing and graphical display of results. Physical-mechanical and analytical methods of testing minerals and rocks. Determination of color, density and hardness of minerals. Dyeing methods and cation exchange method. Methods of optical polarization microscopy (for transmitted and reflected light). Thermal methods of characterization of mineral raw materials. Spectroscopic instrumental methods (Raman and Infrared spectroscopy). X-ray methods (X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence). Electron microscopy methods (Scanning electron microscopy and Transmission electron microscopy). Spectrochemical methods of determining qualitative and quantitative composition. Advantages and disadvantages of analytical methods and criteria for selecting appropriate methods. Laboratory accreditation.
Teaching Methods
Theoretical teaching: lectures with Power Point presentations of each teaching unit. Practical classes: interactive tests of minerals using mineralogical and chemical instruments and agents, computational exercises with graphical display of results and data analysis.

Evaluation and grading
Two colloquiums and an oral exam.
Specific remarks
Students are required to attend classes and take two knowledge tests during the semester. Tests can be repeated once, in extracurricular time. A student who misses more than 20% of classes without a valid reason must repeat the course in order to gain the right to take the exam.
