Lecturer/Associate (practicals)
Prerequisite Form of prerequisites
Hydrology and Hydraulics passed exams
Learning objectives
Introducing students to the basic types, characteristics and elements of drainage systems. Introduction to the methods of calculation of the elements of underground and surface drainage.
Learning outcomes
Students' ability to apply the acquired knowledge in the design and construction of drainage systems.
Content
Types of drainage systems (surface and underground) and analysis of problems solved by their construction. Physical and mechanical properties of soil required for drainage calculation. Methods for calculating vertical infiltration. Conditions for the application of underground drainage. Elements of underground drainage systems based on horizontal pipe drainage and classification according to disposition. Criteria for designing horizontal pipe drainage and calculation of drainage system elements: distance between drains, depth of drainage pipes, diameter and slope of drainage pipe. Criteria for designing protective filters. Elements and disposition of vertical drainage systems (wells) and sizing criteria. Calculation of vertical drainage elements in stationary and non - stationary conditions. Test pumping test for calculation of unknown porous medium parameters. Drainage of buildings under construction. Soil subsidence as a consequence of drainage system construction. Elements of a surface drainage system. Road and airport drainage: calculation of system elements.
Teaching Methods
Theoretical classes are conducted in class through lectures on the board and with the presentation technology. Practical classes are conducted in class through the explanation of individual methodological units (parts of the study) and through independent work of students on the development of the task (conceptual design of the irrigation system) in consultation with the subject teacher and associate.

Evaluation and grading
Attendance to classes (required) - 5 points Colloquia x 2 - 2x15 = 30 points Preparation of assignment - 30 points Written exam - 35 points
Specific remarks
The condition for taking the written exam is the fulfillment of the pre-exam obligations: attendance at classes and finished assignment. Colloquia are not repeated during the semester. Students who do not pass the colloquia can take the oral exam n order to achieve a higher number of points (oral exam takes maximum 30 points).
