An international symposium “Regulatory toxicology” was held on 10 December 2025 at the Republic of Srpska Academy of Science and Art in Banja Luka.

The Minister of Health and Social Care of the Republic of Srpska, Alen Šeranić, said the ministry, through amendments of legislation, initiated the process of establishing the Center for Toxicology within the University Clinic Center of the Republic of Srpska (UKC RS), with the aim of providing treatment in case of possible poisoning with chemicals and biocides.

“We have to bear in mind that such centers are being formed for larger areas. It is important that we have one such center in the Republic of Srpska, so we could keep a registry of possible poisoning and timely react in the sense of the general population”, said Šeranić.

Šeranić pointed out that the citizens encounter chemicals and biocides daily, therefore, a regulatory framework is very important. He added that the Laws on chemicals and biocides are under the competence of the Ministry of Health and Social Care, and that there is a Department in the ministry that is a contact point for chemical safety of the World Health Organization.

The Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Banja Luka, Prof. Ranko Škrbić, PhD, said that one of the main topics of the international symposium “Regulatory toxicology” will be establishing a department of clinical toxicology at the UKC RS.

“We have already agreed with the leadership of UKC some forms of education for our doctors in the field of clinical toxicology, so that we could respond to all challenges of potential poisoning”, added Dean Škrbić.

The opening of this event, organized by the Department of Medical Sciences at the RS Academy of Science and Art, Faculty of Medicine at the University of Banja Luka, and the Association of Toxicologists of the Republic of Srpska, was attended by the Rector of the University of Banja Luka, Prof. Radoslav Gajanin, PhD, who also addressed the audience.
