Glamoč Potato Produced from a Test Tube

HighlightsUniversity of Banja Luka-

In the in vitro laboratory of the Institute for Genetic Resources at the University of Banja Luka, under strictly controlled conditions, the indigenous variety of Glamoč potato has, for the first time, been produced from a test tube.

According to experts, this scientific breakthrough enables the production of healthy and virus-free seed material, which is crucial for preserving the genetic authenticity and continuing the cultivation of one of the most renowned domestic potato varieties.

The process is based on a modern biotechnological method of micropropagation, which ensures stable yields, improved tuber quality, and greater availability of seed material for agricultural producers. In this way, the Institute directly contributes to the preservation of genetic resources of the Republic of Srpska and to strengthening local agricultural production.

The research team that carried out this project consists of the head of the aforementioned laboratory, Assist. Prof. Mirela Kajkut Zeljković, PhD, and junior teaching staff members Sonja Umićević, MA, and David Ducanović.
