Symposium Held on Diagnosis and Treatment of Gynaecological Diseases
University of Banja LukaGeneralThe international scientific symposium titled “Recent advances in Diagnostics and Treatment of Gynaecological Diseases” was held on 16 May 2025 at the Academy of Sciences and Arts of the Republic of Srpska.
The Rector of the University of Banja Luka and Chair of the Organisational Board, prof. Radoslav Gajanin, PhD, stated that the symposium included participants from the United Kingdom and Qatar, and emphasised that healthcare institutions in the Republic of Srpska are equipped with all diagnostic and therapeutic procedures necessary for modern patient care.
“Our patients have access to therapies covered by the Health Insurance Fund, which makes us competitive in the region, and even in Europe,” Gajanin stressed, adding that this was the fourth international interdisciplinary symposium, featuring professors from the United Kingdom and Qatar.
The Secretary General of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of the Republic of Srpska, academician prof. Dragoljub Mirjanić, PhD, expressed the Academy’s strong support for hosting both domestic and international scientific events, as well as thematic discussions and round tables.
Professor Emeritus at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Belgrade, Dr Vesna Kesić, highlighted that modern diagnostic and treatment methods can prevent tumours in women, which is a key message of such gatherings.
“We are striving, through the introduction of modern methods, to help preserve the quality of life of female oncology patients and, if possible, their ability to give birth,” said Dr Kesić, adding that innovations also include biological treatment modalities and targeted therapies.
Gynaecological pathologist Dr Sanjiv Manek from John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford underlined the importance of personalised treatment based on molecular diagnostics.
“We are now not only detecting cancer but also identifying molecular events within those tumours, which allows for more precise and effective therapy,” said Manek.
He noted that the past five to ten years have seen rapid developments in targeted therapies and added that artificial intelligence will significantly contribute to further progress. Manek expressed satisfaction with the symposium’s programme, which addressed current challenges and prospects for improving women’s healthcare.
Professor of paediatric pathology at Sidra Hospital in Qatar, Dr Gordan Vujanić, underscored the significance of such events as platforms for multidisciplinary knowledge exchange and for advancing the level of women’s healthcare.
The symposium was organised by the University of Banja Luka and the Faculty of Medicine, in cooperation with the Department of Medical Sciences of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of the Republic of Srpska and the Association of Pathologists of the Republic of Srpska.
Prior to the symposium, Dr Kesić, Dr Vujanić and Dr Manek, accompanied by prof. Slaviša Đuričić, PhD, visited the Rectorate of the University of Banja Luka, where they were welcomed by Rector Gajanin. The meeting was also attended by the Vice-Rector for Material and Human Resources, prof. Dalibor Kesić, PhD.
