Learning objectives
The goal of the course is to present the basics of a multidisciplinary approach to the artificial establishment of forests and plantations. These activities are based on knowledge of the biological and ecological and gene-ecological characteristics of the species with which forests are artificially raised (founded).
Learning outcomes
Through the course, students gain knowledge about defining important parameters of habitat conditions for species selection, as well as knowledge about preparatory work, planting techniques and care measures in the first years after establishment.
Content
Lecture content: 1. Significance of establishing forests and plantations; 2. Overview of activities in our country and in the world; 3. Selection of species for afforestation; 4. Preparation and treatment of the terrain; 5. Preparation of the place for planting; 6. Properties of planting material (type, age, quality, transplanting stress); 7. Density and method of planting; 8. Nurturing and maintenance of newly established plantations; 9. Measures of care and thinning in function of the stability of established forests and plantations; 10. Basics of plantation forestry; 11. Selection of suitable habitats and clones for the establishment of plantations; 12. Planting material in plantation forestry; 13. Overview of the most important species in the establishment of forests and plantations. Content of the exercises: 1. Basics for the preparation of studies when building new forests; 2. Introduction and objectives; 3. Defining habitat conditions; 4. Habitat preparation for afforestation; 5. Selection of species for afforestation; 5. Planting; 6. Works after the establishment of culture; 7. Calendar of works and calculation of costs; 8. Concluding considerations. Field teaching is mandatory for one day.
