Lecturer
Lecturer/Associate (practicals)
Prerequisite Form of prerequisites
Basics of Mineralogy Passed the Basics of Mineralogy exam
Learning objectives
IThe goals of the course are to acquaint students with the three genetic groups of rocks that make up the Earth's crust: igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, their assembly (structure and texture) and mineral composition; getting to know their economic importance, understanding the environment of creation and distribution, especially in the territory of our country; as well as their macroscopic recognition based on physical characteristics.
Learning outcomes
Ability to determine the most common rock types and petrographic analysis (structure, texture, mineral composition); Training for practical work in the field and in laboratories; Acquiring the necessary knowledge for geological mapping and exploration of mineral resources; Applicability of acquired knowledge in various branches of industry, construction, chemical industry, etc.; Acquiring knowledge necessary for following subjects in higher years of study
Content
Structure of the Earth (plate tectonics). Basic terms about rocks. Rock types according to genesis. Physical and chemical characteristics of magma. Origin and differentiation of magma. The way magmatic bodies appear. Assemblage of igneous rocks (texture and structure). Petrogenic minerals. Mineralogical and chemical principles of classification of igneous rocks. Igneous rocks: acidic, intermediate, basic and ultrabasic. Formation processes and composition of sedimentary rocks. Sedimentary rocks - Classification, terminology and nomenclature, sedimentation environments. Metamorphism and types of metamorphic changes. Mineral composition and assemblage of metamorphic rocks. Metamorphic rocks - Classification, terminology and nomenclature. Environmental changes and metamorphic facies.
Teaching Methods
Theoretical teaching: lectures with Power Point presentations of each teaching unit. Practical teaching: interactive with immediate practice with rcks from the existing systematized faculty collection. If possible, a visit to a field with an open geological profile (an active quarry is also an option).

Evaluation and grading
Two colloquiums and an oral exam.
Specific remarks
Students are required to attend classes and take two knowledge tests during the semester. Tests can be repeated once, in extracurricular time. A student who misses more than 20% of classes without a valid reason must repeat the course in order to gain the right to take the exam.
