Academy of Arts

The high concentration of young people interested in art categories as well as the lack of trained actors, painters and musicians were the reason for a number of professors-artists, following the experience and models of the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad and the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Belgrade, to establish the Academy of Arts at the University of Banja Luka. This higher education institution was founded in 1999 by the Decision of the National Assembly of the Republic of Srpska No 01-605/99 of 15 July 1999.

Today, it has three study programmes: Fine Arts, Dramatic Arts and Music Arts. Even though the problems concerning the premises, staff and finances marked the first years of the Academy’s operations and existence, they were not an obstacle for the Academy to quickly achieve outstanding results, in the local and the European frameworks alike. With the efforts and exceptional abilities of the leaders of the Academy, appropriate classrooms, excellent staff in the key fields of art and regular financing were provided, with special reference to the investment in young staff that intended to stay at the Academy.

The Academy of Arts is one of the most important pillars of the development of the cultural life of the Republic of Srpska. During the twenty years of its existence and work, a number of people have been educated for all three fields of art. Former students of the Academy are involved in the theatre, film, television, music and art life of our Republic of Srpska, so it is hard to imagine it without them.

The Academy is a place that generates the best students, and the education is such that the work of the students and professors at the Academy of Arts is visible to everyone, as it is being presented all the time to the public of Banja Luka and the Republic of Srpska. The Academy is proud of the results achieved in the past. Those are, primarily, successes made by its students in the artistic, cultural and public life of Banja Luka and the Republic of Srpska, which has influenced the general cultural image of the environment. Hence, some of its former or current students are bearers of theatre repertoires in the Republic of Srpska, their works of art adorn the walls of galleries and museums, while the Music Arts Study Programme creates, to a large extent, the musical life in our city and beyond.

Students, professors and teaching assistants of the Academy of Arts take an active part in the domestic, European and world art scene, achieving important results and winning awards at regional and international festivals, competitions and contests. No participation of the Academy students in any of the festivals in the region and in Europe has so far been unrewarded. Up to date, the Academy of Arts has carried out a number of art projects.
